Media accreditation process opens for 2020 Olympic Games
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The United States Olympic Committee today began accepting requests from U.S. media organizations for accreditation to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. The application can be found here and the deadline for submission is October 15, 2018.
The process is open to:
- Daily or weekly newspapers (limited availability for weeklies)
- National news or sports magazines
- Web-based organizations with staff members providing original content
- Photographic media organizations with wide-ranging magazine, newspaper and web-based clientele
All requesting organizations must be based in the United States and meet the guideline standards included on the registration site. Late requests will not be considered for the first allocation and will be placed on a waiting list for later consideration.
The USOC receives a limited number of accreditations from the International Olympic Committee for allocation to U.S. media outlets.
Requesting organizations will be notified of the results by the end of the year.
All non-rights holding broadcasters will be accredited by the IOC. Requests will be accepted from Jan. 24 to March 15, 2019, at Olympic.org.
U.S. Media Accreditation Guidelines
Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
All accreditation requests must be submitted by the sports editor/managing editor of the news organization, or another authorized representative.
The United States Olympic Committee receives a limited number of credentials for allocation to U.S. media outlets for the 2020 Olympic Games, which will take place from July 24 through August 9 in Tokyo, Japan. The following guidelines are used in allocating credentials:
- Applicants must be U.S.-based organizations.
- Only media organizations will be accredited, not individuals.
- Applicants must be:
- A daily or approved weekly newspaper,
- A national news or sports magazine, or
- A web-based organization with staff members providing original content.
- The USOC does not accredit rights-holding television/radio networks, non-rights-holding television/radio networks or wire services.
- The USOC will make every attempt to allocate at least one credential to every eligible news organization.
- For more than one credential, the USOC will use a series of criteria that includes:
- Demonstrated year-round coverage of Olympic sports
- Presence of an assigned Olympic beat reporter
- Previous Olympic coverage
- Number of local and regional Olympic athletes
- Circulation
CREDENTIAL TYPES AND ACCESS
E: Reporter/editor/photo editor who is employed or contracted by a world news agency, national agency, general daily newspaper, sports daily, sports magazine or sports website, or an independent/freelance journalist under contract.
Access: All venues (zone 4), tribune seating, press conference areas, mixed zones, press workrooms, MPC, Olympic Village (with visitor pass), Opening and Closing ceremonies (with special ticket) and TM transport.
Es: Single Sport Reporter/editor/photo editor who is employed or contracted by a world news agency, national agency, general daily newspaper, sports daily, sports magazine or sports website, or an independent/freelance journalist under contract
Access: Venue for the single sport coverage (zone 4), single venue tribune seating, press conference area, mixed zone, press workroom and access to the MPC, Olympic Village (with visitor pass), Opening and Closing ceremonies (with special ticket) and TM transport.
EP: Photographer meeting the same criteria as “E.”
Access: All venues (zone 4 and spectator areas), photo positions, press conference areas, mixed zones, press workrooms, MPC, Olympic Village (with visitor pass), Opening and Closing ceremonies (with special ticket) and TM transport
Eps: Photographer meeting same criteria as “Es.”
Access: Single Sport (zone 4 and spectator areas), photo positions, press conference area, mixed zone, press workroom and access to the MPC, Olympic Village (with visitor pass), Opening and Closing ceremonies (with special ticket) and TM transport
EC: MPC-based editor and/or technician, office assistant, secretary, interpreter, driver or messenger. Must be with a press group/newspaper/magazine or National Olympic Committee that has reserved a private office area at the MPC.
Access: Main Press Center only, not entitled to special ticketing.
ET: Technician meeting the same criteria as “E.”
Access: All venues (zone 4 and spectator areas), tribune seating (under specific conditions), press conference areas, mixed zones, press workrooms, MPC, Olympic Village (with visitor pass), Opening and Closing ceremonies (with special ticket) and TM transport.
SPECIAL TICKETING
Written and photographic press ticketing of high-demand events, including Opening and Closing ceremonies, by the IOC is based on the following principles:
- Ensure access to accredited media representing the NOCs whose athletes and teams are competing in the events
- Guarantee international coverage for the events
- Ensure an efficient and safe working environment for all media
The USOC will oversee the process to select USOC-credentialed media who are granted access to special-ticketed events and will coordinate the distribution from the USOC media office in the MPC. There will be a qualification system for tickets that includes:
- Coverage of Olympic Trials
- National and international coverage of the sport
- Coverage of Olympic sports in general
- Hometowns of athletes involved
- Circulation
